If you’ve recently sustained a sports injury, or have been suffering from one for some time, it can be very tempting to dismiss it as “nothing serious” and simply “put up with it,” carrying on as best you can.<\/p>
Or it’s easy to become discouraged and feel “stuck,” wondering if you’ll ever be able to return to sports or stay active as you used to…<\/p>

Traditionally, doctors and medical professionals will simply tell patients to “rest” or discontinue the activity. This, in our opinion, is ridiculous and causes more harm while increasing your risk of future injuries. This is because when we rest, our muscles atrophy and weaken! It explains why so many people suffering from a sports injury wonder:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
Most people believe that if they suffer a sports injury, they will be able to return to their sport or exercise after a few days of rest. When they return to exercise, however, they are still restricted – sometimes even more so than when it first appeared. When you rest, you may experience little or no pain; however, as soon as you resume your activities, the pain returns, and no amount of rest seems to help.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
Another scenario we see all the time in our Physical Therapy Clinic is when people go to the Doctor, and the Doctor tells them they need to take a break, rest, wear support and “try these painkillers” to “see how it goes”. Then, four weeks later, they return to the same Doctor because the injury hasn’t improved, only to be given MORE rest and ANOTHER prescription for even stronger pills.<\/p>
The issue is that when it comes to sports injuries such as hamstring strains, ankle sprains, and a runner’s knee, complete rest is rarely the best advice.<\/p>
So you’re probably confused and frustrated because you’ve been told various things by various people. Perhaps you believe you have a back problem, but it is a hip problem.<\/p>
Sports injuries can be very perplexing because, more often than not, the source of the pain is not the area that needs to be repaired or worked on, and if you rest for too long, other parts of the body become just as, if not more problematic!<\/p>
This ambiguity about “resting” frequently leads people to procrastinate and postpone deciding what to do to help fix their injury and return to exercise. Worse, many people simply accept that “their days of being active are over,” as if it’s normal or “has” to be that way.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
